Tutoring gifted and talented students

Tutoring gifted and talented students Tutoring is often associated with students struggling to keep up with the curriculum. But what about those exceptional, bright minds at the top of the class? Parents also seek tutoring for gifted and talented students in a bid to open their minds to academic abilities and opportunities. Tutoring can assist gifted and talented students to reach further than the classroom lesson plans at their school and stimulate their inquisitive minds to tackle more challenging aspects of the curriculum. Sydney mathematics tutor Richard Stevens says it’s important to give gifted and talented students the opportunity to extend themselves sideways – not upwards – in the curriculum. “For me, in mathematics, that’s exploring numbers and getting a better understanding and a deeper and richer understanding of how numbers work and some of the things you can do with numbers,” he says. “The benefits are that they get to study some mathematics at a much dee

How Summer Programs Can Boost Children’s Learning

During summer vacation, many students lose knowledge and skills.     Gifted at Play: IOT Media Center - Summer Program 2015  By the end of summer, students perform, on average, one month behind where they left off in the spring. Of course, not all students experience “average” losses. Summer learning loss disproportionately affects low-income students. While all students lose some ground in mathematics over the summer, low-income students lose more ground in reading, while their higher-income peers may even gain. Most disturbing is that summer learning loss is cumulative; over time, the difference between the summer learning rates of low-income and higher-income students contributes substantially to the achievement gap. Because many students lose learning over the summer and some students need more time on task to master content, participation in summer learning programs should mitigate learning loss and could even produce achievement gains. Indeed, educators and policy

Choosing a summer program or your child.

Choosing a summer program     Though summer programs and camps can have a deep impact on a child's development, not all camps have what it takes — a well-thought out philosophy, a mature and alert staff, and counselors who provide excellent role models and give kids a fun time. By looking at the intangibles, you can choose a program wisely. http:// www. giftedatplay.org

Three Ways A Summer Program Can Help Your Child

How a Summer Program Can Help Your Child     Building blocks to Adulthood Unlike the perceptible advantages that children gain from a summer program, the intangible advantages are harder to pin down. In conjunction with home and school, and maybe even a summer job, summer programs are one of the many building blocks that create an adult. And while few children realize how much they've been influenced by their summer experiences, as adults they often see how their lives were enriched and layers were added to their development.   Trying new things Trying out new things is another significant intangible benefit of a summer youth program. At home and in school, children can dodge new experiences. At well-run camps, they can't. Of course, the primary goal of any well-run program is fun.   Independence Independence from parents also exerts a strong influence. The child who is away from home encounters new experiences independently. With the safety net of
